Expressive Watercolor and Ink Florals: Tulips

Do you love the fluid beauty of loose watercolor florals but aren’t sure how to begin? Or are you looking for a way to relax your approach to watercolor and achieve a fresher, more intuitive style? If so, this class is for you!

In this class, Heather will share techniques for capturing the essence of a floral subject by emphasizing movement and spontaneity over realism. We’ll focus on ways to simplify the subject and be inspired by the intermingling of the watercolor pigments on the page, letting go of the need to depict every detail.

Beginning with some warm up exercises to become more comfortable with our tools and the behavior of water, pigments, and ink, we’ll then create a vibrant floral painting that combines loose watercolor with the structure of ink. All materials will be provided, and you’ll leave with a completed painting as well as principles that will enable you to create future paintings in this expressive style.

This class builds on the techniques practiced in Heather’s Spring Daffodils class by exploring ways to approach a different flower. It is also suitable as a standalone course, however: no prior experience is necessary.

Whether you are completely new to watercolor or are seeking to add a new way of working to your skillset, you’ll be able to enjoy this relaxed time of painting together as we exercise creative intuition and explore the exciting ways that watercolor and ink can interact.

Beginner Zentangle

The Zentangle® Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. The Zentangle Method increases focus and creativity and provides artistic satisfaction. In this beginner class, you'll create 4 distinct patterns or "tangles" on a 3 1/2 square piece of paper (referred to as a “tile”) using a pencil, a Micron pen, and a tortillon (a drawing tool made of rolled paper that blends pencil marks to give your artwork a 3-dimensional quality).

This is a two-hour class taught by Marian Morrill, CZT (Certified Zentangle Teacher). If you can write your name -- you can create art with the Zentangle method

Bunny Keepsake

Bunny Keepsake

Join Ari (they/them) to make a sweet bunny keepsake out of recycled felted wool, just in time for spring! This is a combination hand sewing and needle felting class. We will trace patterns and cut out fabric, then decorate the bunnies using applique, beads, buttons, and needle felting. While the focus of instruction won’t be on embroidery, if you already know how you can use those skills here too.

After decorating, we will sew and stuff the bunnies. They can stand upright and are around 10 inches tall. There’s a good chance you will be able to finish them in class, but if not, you’ll go home with everything you need to complete them.

Do you have a wool garment that you shrunk in the wash? Please bring it along to use yourself or to share with the class. Turn oops into art! If you don’t have anything to bring, that’s fine too- Ari can provide fabric.

Beginning and intermediate hand sewers and needle felters are welcome.

Getting to Know and Maintain your Machine

Have you bought or inherited a sewing machine, and are now wondering how to use it? Join me for this orientation to sewing machines and how to maintain them. Bring your own machine (including the foot pedal and power cord) and machine instruction manual to class, and we’ll walk through the basic steps to get you sewing. These steps will include how to thread the machine, wind a bobbin and sew with a straight and zig zag stitch. We will also discuss types of fabric, threads and needles. If you don’t have a manual, search for one on-line. We will also demonstrate routine sewing machine maintenance (cleaning and oiling the machine) to keep it in top working condition.
