Color Mixing with Confidence in Watercolor: Foundations of Color Theory
Are you new to watercolor and unsure how to create a usable palette of colors? Or do you have a painting practice but are frustrated by not being able to consistently mix the exact colors that you want? Does color theory intimidate you? If so, this class is for you! This course will demystify the essential elements of color theory as applied to watercolors and equip you with the ability to use these principles confidently in your own painting.
This first class in the color mixing series explores the relationships between primary, secondary, and tertiary color models, the way that color temperature affects these connections, and how to use a color wheel as a tool for mixing. We will discuss the importance of understanding the pigments included in paints and will learn how to make mixing decisions based on these pigments. Using a limited palette as a starting point, we will practice these concepts in a simple floral painting by mixing a range of pure, saturated colors and learn how best to avoid unintentionally creating “mud.” You will leave with a range of strategies for mixing the color that you want every time, best practices to integrate into your own painting, and a solid foundation on which to refine your mixing skills.
Some experience in watercolor is helpful, but beginners are welcome! If you are just starting out, the knowledge that you gain from this course will accelerate your learning by helping you feel better prepared to mix any colors you need. And if you’re a more experienced painter, this course is a wonderful opportunity to level up your practice by improving your color mixing skills. While each class in the series is designed to function as a standalone, taking the classes together offer the most learning benefits as the concepts covered build on each other.
Come join us as we explore the world of creative possibilities opened by a deeper understanding of color mixing!

Make a Mini-Zine with Jess!
A zine is a self-published, handmade, or small press booklet that is distributed for the purpose of sharing ideas, experiences, and perspectives, often of historically marginalized or underrepresented subcultures. Zines come in many different shapes and sizes and can be about ANYTHING, but it’s especially satisfying to make an 8-page mini-zine from ONE piece of printer paper.
Join local artist and zine-maker Jess Walters for an interactive workshop “How to Make A Mini-Zine.” We will explore a variety of examples of zines, learn some of Jess’ favorite collage techniques, and pick up some copying tips and tricks before transforming an ordinary piece of paper into a creative work of art.
Jess will demonstrate how to fold a single sheet of paper into an 8-page mini-zine and materials and prompts will be provided* for folks to fill out their zine with writing, stickers, drawings, and/or collage. Take your zine home, make copies to share with friends, or bring some to swap with other zine-makers!
Jess Walters (they/them) is a local artist, advocate, and independent scholar. Their work focuses on the intersections of art and health and they strategize to improve accessibility accommodations in creative and cultural arts spaces to cultivate inclusive opportunities for community engagement. Walters is an Arts Research Fellow at the UVA Center for Health Humanities and Ethics, a Board Certified Patient Advocate (BCPA) and a founding member of Charlottesville ZineFest. Their artwork has been featured at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, Second Street Gallery, and New City Arts’ Welcome Gallery.
*All instructions and materials required zine-making will be provided, including items from Jess’ personal collage library. However, if participants would like to bring photographs, books, magazines, or other paper materials specific to their interests or passions to collage with, they are invited and encouraged to do so.

Color Mixing with Confidence in Watercolor: Working with Neutrals
Are you new to watercolor and unsure how to create a usable palette of colors? Or do you have a painting practice but are frustrated by not being able to consistently mix the exact colors that you want? Does color theory intimidate you? If so, this class is for you! This course will demystify the essential elements of color theory as applied to watercolors and equip you with the ability to use these principles confidently in your own painting.
This second class in the color mixing series will explore how to neutralize bright colors while still maintaining their beautiful dimensionality. We will cover methods for mixing neutrals with a limited palette, how to darken colors effectively without deadening them, and how to mix chromatic blacks and darks without using black pigment. We will practice these concepts in a simple winter landscape painting by mixing a range of neutral colors and learn how best to avoid unintentionally creating “mud.” You will leave with a range of strategies for mixing the color that you want every time, best practices to integrate into your own painting, and a solid foundation on which to refine your mixing skills.

Color Mixing with Confidence in Watercolor: Mixing Greens
Are you new to watercolor and unsure how to create a usable palette of colors? Or do you have a painting practice but are frustrated by not being able to consistently mix the exact colors that you want? Does color theory intimidate you? If so, this class is for you! This course series is designed to demystify the essential elements of color theory as applied to watercolors and equip you with the ability to use these principles confidently in your own painting. In this class, we will focus on mixing different shades of one of the trickiest but most important color families: greens!
Following an overview of the basic concepts covered previously in the color mixing series, we will begin our deep dive into greens by using various combinations of primary colors to mix a range of natural landscape and botanical greens from a limited palette. After experimenting with the greens that can be achieved from a few base primaries, we will expand our green repertoire by learning how to alter some premixed green pigments to achieve an even greater range of options and to save time. Finally, we will put this new knowledge to use by painting a simple spring landscape showcasing the range of natural mixed greens that you will be able to create. You will leave with a range of strategies for mixing the specific color that you want every time, best practices to integrate into your own painting, and a solid foundation on which to refine your mixing skills.
Some experience in watercolor is helpful, but beginners are welcome! If you are just starting out, the knowledge that you gain from this course will accelerate your learning by helping you feel better prepared to mix any colors you need (not only greens!). And if you are a more experienced painter, this course is a wonderful opportunity to level up your practice by improving your color mixing skills. While each class in the series is designed to function as a standalone, taking the classes together offer the most learning benefits as the concepts covered build on each other.

Slow Stitch - A Gentle, Meditative Approach to Hand Sewing
This session is a laid back, beginner friendly Introduction to Slow Stitching.
Slow stitching is a relaxing stitching practice which focuses on the PROCESS rather than perfection or a specific finished product. Yet, in my experience, results are beautiful and unique pieces of art that show the makers hand.
Slow Stitching can be a great way to reset, reduce stress or simply explore your own creativity.
We will explore the nature of slow stitching , several basic stitches, a bit about color, texture and how to select fabrics that enhance the meditative practice. These are guidelines to get started - there are no rules or patterns.
Start where you are: Beginners …those with sewing/embroidery experience …those seeking relaxation and a fun way to “calm the chaos” and get grounded. All are welcome. Anyone can do this!

Expressive Watercolor and Ink Florals: Spring Daffodils
Do you love the fluid beauty of loose watercolor florals but aren’t sure how to begin? Or are you looking for a way to relax your approach to watercolor and achieve a fresher, more intuitive style? If so, this class is for you!
In this class, Heather will share techniques for capturing the essence of a floral subject by emphasizing movement and spontaneity over realism. We’ll focus on ways to simplify the subject and be inspired by the intermingling of the watercolor pigments on the page, letting go of the need to depict every detail.
Beginning with some warm up exercises to become more comfortable with our tools and the behavior of water, pigments, and ink, we’ll then create a vibrant floral painting that combines loose watercolor with the structure of ink. All materials will be provided, and you’ll leave with a completed painting as well as principles that will enable you to create future paintings in this expressive style.
Whether you are completely new to watercolor or are seeking to add a new way of working to your skillset, you’ll be able to enjoy this relaxed time of painting together as we exercise creative intuition and explore the exciting ways that watercolor and ink can interact.

Collage in Watercolor and Ink: Winter Botanicals
Discover the possibilities of using collage in loose, expressive mixed media art with us as we create a dynamic watercolor and ink painting of winter botanicals!
In this relaxing, creative class, Heather will share techniques for using watercolor, ink, and collage to create paintings alive with texture. We’ll begin by creating our own collage papers with expressive abstract watercolor. After forming the basic structure of our compositions through cut paper collage, we’ll then use both watercolor and ink to add movement and depth to our mixed media paintings.
Perfect for both beginners and seasoned artists alike, this class will help you loosen up your approach to painting and learn how to use texture as a tool for creating compelling pieces. In the process, we’ll also discuss some basic techniques for using watercolor washes, creating color schemes that work, and designing strong compositions using the various materials at our disposal. All necessary materials will be provided, but you’re also welcome to bring your own reference photos and/or art supplies to practice if desired. You’ll leave not only with a beautiful finished painting, but also with lots of ideas to continue the fun on your own!
Come join us for a time of joyful creating as we explore exciting ways to combine texture with watercolor and ink!
