MLK Jr Day Crafting and Letter Writing

In honor of MLK Day and his famous dream, we would like to invite you to the Scrappy Elephant for a little crafting and letter writing.

The classroom will be open all day Monday for you to come and make your own dream cloud. You are more than welcome to take it home with you or leave it with us and we will add it to our display. This is a free event for all ages. We will have staff on hand to assist you if you need any help.

We will also have a letter writing table. As a new Congressional and VA General Assembly term begins, it's important to remind our elected officials who they are beholden to: We the People. Decorate your message with art supplies provided to give it that personal touch. We will have envelopes and stamps on hand, and will even put the letters in the mail for you!

We will also have a chance for you to learn about Craftivism. Attendees are invited to flip through books on craftivism and other relevant topics related to activism. Books include The Craftivist Handbook, Let's Move the Needle, All We Can Save, and The Guerilla Girls' Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art.

Let’s honor our country and MLK Day by making sure to focus on what is important and what truly matters.

Traditional Screen Printing Workshop

Traditional Screen Printing Workshop

In this class, we will go through the entire screen printing process, from start to finish, using a transparency film carving method instead of photo emulsion. We will begin by creating a design—I'll have some pre-made designs for you to choose from, but you’re also welcome to bring a design you’ve created ahead of time or come up with one on the day of the class!

You’ll trace your design onto clear paper and then carve it out using an exacto knife. Once your design is ready, we will secure the transparency film to the screen and begin the printing process! I’ll provide paper for you to print on, and you can make as many prints as you like. Since we’ll be using black fabric ink, feel free to bring a clothing item or two if you’d like to print on fabric—I’ll also show you how to properly treat the fabric afterward.

This screen can be used for your design as long as the transparency film holds up, and you’re welcome to create and print as many new designs as you like on the screen! One of the best things about this method is how easy it is to change designs and try different techniques. Screen printing is a fun and versatile process, and this method is an exciting way to explore its creative possibilities!

Watercolor Workshop Series: Mastering Basic Techniques

Objective: Build confidence in using fundamental watercolor techniques.

Content:

  1. Review of techniques covered in Workshop 1, with a focus on application.

  2. Introduction to layering and glazing techniques for depth and texture.

  3. Discussion on controlling water and pigment ratios.

  4. Activity: students will complete guided exercises, such as painting simple shapes and gradients, to reinforce their understanding of the techniques.

Description:

Take your watercolor skills to the next level! Building on the previous week’s workshop, in this session, we’ll dive deeper into mastering the magic of watercolor by exploring the art application. You’ll learn layering through glazing. You’ll unlock the secrets of water control — knowing exactly how much is just right — and fine-tune your paint-to-water ratios for maximum impact. You will determine which techniques to use when — and how to properly perform them.

Get ready to conquer those tricky techniques and bring your artistic vision to life with bold, beautiful washes and precise, controlled strokes. Whether you’re looking to create soft, ethereal layers or vivid pops of color, this session is packed with tips and tricks to elevate your painting game. Let’s level up and paint like pros!

Have questions? Feel free to reach out to Blake at ArtByBBlossoms@gmail.com. Let’s paint something amazing together!

Adult Sewing Class

Sharpen your sewing skills as you make a variety of projects in this sewing series with Becky. Good for both beginners and those with some sewing experience, we’ll cover all the components of using a sewing machine as well as basic techniques. Students will bring a working machine (including power cord and pedal) but if they don’t have one, we can provide one. A sewing kit (pins, measuring tape, marking tools, fabric scissors, ruler) is suggested, but not required. We’ll use items from Scrappy Elephant for our projects, including zipper pouches, tote bags, maybe even dip into some garment pattern sewing as we work at our own pace.

$150 for 4 classes
