Objective: Introduce students to the basic materials and techniques of watercolor painting.

  3. Introduction to essential techniques: washes, wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry brush.

  4. Activity: students will practice creating color swatches and simple washes on paper to become familiar with their supplies.

Ready to dive into the magical world of watercolor? Join us for an engaging kickoff session where we’ll unravel the mysteries of paint, paper, and the techniques that make watercolor so mesmerizing. From exploring the perfect brushes to discovering how paper choice transforms your art, you’ll leave feeling empowered to create with confidence. 

We’ll also get hands-on with the essential moves that every watercolorist needs in their toolbox: *wet-on-wet* for those dreamy blends, *wet-on-dry* for crisp edges, and fun techniques like *charging,* *glazing,* and *lifting* that add depth and drama to your work. What if you align with your intention and create space for new insights?  

You will be guided through a future mindedness process and vision board. Learn to tap into your intuition and experience flow. Through a process of guided relaxation, journaling, and collage you will have the opportunity to explore what wants to be known. Tap into the unconscious and allow information (words and images) to come forth that are transformational.

Afterwards you will learn some practical tools to make your vision board come alive in your day to day. It’s fun, magical, and rewarding.

Beginner Zentangle

The Zentangle® Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. The Zentangle Method increases focus and creativity and provides artistic satisfaction. In this beginner class, you'll create 4 distinct patterns or "tangles" on a 3 1/2 square piece of paper (referred to as a “tile”) using a pencil, a Micron pen, and a tortillon (a drawing tool made of rolled paper that blends pencil marks to give your artwork a 3-dimensional quality).

Join us for a monthly crafting circle. Join our circle and create art and Scrappy Elephant and the Artist donate 100% of class fees to a local non-profit. January - we will make mittens from recycled machine felted wool and cashmere sweaters. Bring an old wool sweater if you have a favorite ready for new life (machine wash HOT and dry in dryer first) or use one of ours. We will hand stitch the form with a simple embroidery stitch. Beginner friendly. Class fee is sliding scale and 100% of class fees will be donated to a local non-profit.

Watercolor Workshop Series: Color Mixing and Application

Objective: Understand color mixing techniques and their application in watercolor painting.

  1. In-depth exploration of the color wheel and color relationships.

Ah, the peaceful, relaxing art of mixing the exact right color. Totally chill, right? Not if you’re not a seasoned mixologist. Which you will become in part 3 of the Watercolor Workshop Series. In this session, we’ll dive deep into the color wheel and its representation of color theory. We’ll explore color relationships, complementary tones, secondary colors, and the essential paints every watercolorist should have in their toolbox. You’ll learn how to wield undertones, how to mix various shades, and how to find  perfect color combinations. We’ll wrap everything together by matching colors to a reference photo so you can revel in your own mastery.

Collage-A-Card with Jess Get sentimental on a Sunday afternoon and make a one-of-a-kind greeting card with local artist, writer, and patient advocate, Jess Walters. Jess is celebrating their 6th year of life post-kidney transplant by sharing one of their favorite ways to express gratitude: personalized greeting cards!

Learn some of Jess’ favorite collage techniques and customize your own greeting card, postcard, or folded mini zine to gift to someone you love or keep for yourself. Find your own special way to say “Thank you” , “Happy Birthday,” express sympathy to someone going through a tough time, or tell someone you love them with pictures, words, or both!

Snacks will be provided while you sift through collage materials, explore paper-cutting tools, and workshop wording to express your sentiments and create your own unique work of art.

All tools and materials for this workshop will be provided, but attendees are welcome and encouraged to bring paper materials and ephemera that are meaningful to you.

Workshop materials include (but are not limited to): blank greeting cards, blank post cards, various styles and colors of paper/scraps, glue, scissors, stickers & sticker alphabet letters, assorted paper cutters and punches, magazines for cutting, pen knives & cutting mats, markers and pens, washi tape, rulers, bone folders, stencils.

Masks are encouraged for this workshop.

Mending Workshop

The goal of this class is to learn some simple clothing repair techniques such as fixing a hem, sewing on a button, repairing split seams, patching holes (with visible or invisible mending) and replacing elastic. Participants are encouraged to bring in their own articles of clothing in need of repair and learn to fix them during class time. Sewing notions will be provided. A basic knowledge of sewing by hand or by machine is ideal but can also be taught. Demo repair projects will be available for practice.

Join Emma as she teaches you the basics of making a crochet sweater! You will learn how to measure yourself properly, half-double crochet, single crochet through back loop only and how to hand sew your pieces together! You must know how to crochet or have at least taken crochet 101.

Kids After School Sewing Class

Sharpen your sewing skills as you make a variety of projects in this sewing series with Becky. Good for both beginners and those with some sewing experience, we’ll cover all the components of using a sewing machine as well as basic techniques. Students will bring a working machine (including power cord and pedal) but if they don’t have one, we can provide one. A sewing kit (pins, measuring tape, marking tools, fabric scissors, ruler) is suggested, but not required. We’ll use items from Scrappy Elephant for our projects, including snack bags, tote bags, pj pants, aprons and/or stuffies.

for ages 10 and up

4 Thursdays from 5-6:30, skipping 11/28 and finishing on 12/5

Students will bring a working machine (including power cord and pedal) but if they don’t have one, we can provide one. A sewing kit (pins, measuring tape, marking tools, fabric scissors, ruler) is suggested, but not required. We’ll use items from Scrappy Elephant for our projects, including zipper pouches, tote bags, maybe even dip into some garment pattern sewing as we work at our own pace.

Watercolor Workshop: Succulents

Join us for a peaceful and engaging watercolor session where we'll paint the beautiful echeveria, a popular type of succulent known for its rosette shape and vibrant hues. This workshop is beginner to intermediate friendly. Blake Bottoms will offer step-by-step guidance on watercolor techniques such as blending, shading, and creating depth to capture the unique textures and colors of this striking plant.

No prior watercolor experience is required, and all supplies will be provided. Come immerse yourself in a creative atmosphere and leave with your own stunning artwork of this resilient and fascinating plant!
