Boro Inspired Visible Mending

  • The Scrappy Elephant (map)

Come learn some practical visible mending basics for extending the life of your clothing and fabrics while making them more unique and beautiful. Not only that, you’ll be helping to keep materials out of the waste stream! We’ll cover patching as well as straight stitching for added strength. We will be mending by hand, not using a machine. Please bring your own piece of clothing or other fabric item (bag, curtain, etc) to work on. Bring something that is made of a sturdy non-stretchy material; denim or canvas works great! If you don’t currently have a damaged item, you can either bring something of your own to practice on and add some embellishment, or the instructor can provide you with a piece of fabric. For patches, you can bring non-stretchy fabric that you’d like to use, or the instructor will have some on hand to use. We’ll get a start on your project and send you home with the materials and know-how to complete it. Instructor Ari (they/them) is an experienced mender who has spent countless hours fixing clothing and other fabric items for themself and their family, as well as for the members of Twin Oaks community, where about 90 people live.
